I was afraid to sleep when I was a child. I would lay on my face with my knees up under me and listen to the horrible arguing from below. I was in constant fear that one of the monsters would come and carry me into the debacle below.
Many times I would fall asleep during school.I was one of those gifted children that did well in school no matter what. I loved school because it was safe there.
Now that I am older I sleep well. My husband is always right there next to me and I know he would protect me from any harm. I can now say that I am rested.
On my last birthday I was horrified at how fate had put me into the middle of a children’s party place.
My niece, Patty’s birthday was the day before mine and my husband and I had made elaborate plans for her party at Chucky Cheeses. We ordered two cakes, extra pizzas, and extra game tickets. We had invited all fifteen of our nieces and nephews, all of our adult friends with their children and grandchildren.
Unfortunately, my niece got admitted to the hospital the morning of her birthday as she had taken a bad spill on her new birthday bike and had a serious head injury. We could not get a refund on the party so at the appointed time we all headed into the building. My plan was to pick a different niece and have the party for her even though her actual birthday was several months away. I was in front of the crowd when we got to the chained entrance where they ask you questions about the birthday child. My best friend blurted out that the birthday child was in the hospital and that I had a birthday the following day and since we couldn’t get a refund on the party that I was going to be the birthday girl. I nearly fainted and my husband was out at our vehicle still gathering items for the party so I decided it would not be a good idea to faint without him there to catch me. I just stood there turning very red. The nice young man who was asking the questions put his arm around my shoulders and said, “That’s okay, you can be my birthday girl.” He walked us back to our set of tables and seated me at the kids table close to where Chucky would dance. My husband finally came in and when he found me he asked me why I was sitting at the kids table. Just then David, the young man who had pledged that I would be his birthday girl came over and put a large blowup crown on my head. When he left I explained how I ended up where I was.
The party continued and Chuck Cheese came up and started to dance. Children crowded around him dancing to the music. My adult son came up behind me and insisted that I dance with Chucky. I did and when I looked over at my son he was sliding off his chair in a fit of laughter. In fact all of my friends and all of the children were having a marvelous time laughing and encouraging me. I bit the bullet and managed to smile. After that I sat back down at the kids table and had some pizza. About twenty minutes later David came up to me to advise that the ticket booth was now ready and insisted that I go in and grab as many tickets as I could. Well, I figured the kids would love to have them so I got into it. I let most of them fall into my crown and when I saw two 500 value tickets on the ground I got down and picked them up. My tickets totaled over three thousand points. While I was in there I looked over our table and saw my daughter’s mother-in-law laughing loudly and pointing at me. I was happy when I got to sit back down.
My embarrassment was not complete because David then came up and placed the two cakes in front of me. He asked, “Can I put the candles on now.” I was devastated. I told him I didn’t want everyone to see the 65 candles on my cakes. He told me he had a good plan for the candles and to leave it to him. Shortly he game back and made a six out of a few of the candles on one cake and a five on the other. Altogether there were only about twelve candles so I was okay with that. Everyone sang Happy Birthday and I blew out my candles. You have to imagine the laughter that surrounded me. Finally it was over and I got to go home. But the next day when I checked my Facebook page, there I was. My son had put a picture of me smiling with my crown on and my daughter had done a video of me dancing with Chucky. I turned off my computer and refused to answer the phone.
Months later I went back on Facebook and looked at the comments. To my surprise, everyone loved the pictures and video and thought it was wonderful that I had my sixty-fifth birthday at Chucky Cheese.
I was still embarrassed, but tried to put it behind me because every time I thought about it I shuddered and shrank another inch. All I could think about was how I had humiliated myself.
Well, it has been a year and my kids and friends still tell me what a wonderful party I had for my big birthday. They thought I was really a cool mom and really courageous.
When I think about it now I don’t feel humiliated. I think about how everyone including the kids and my relatives, and friends had such a great time at my party. I also realized that I had actually had a fabulous time also. I keep my crown and the medal they gave me hanging up where I am reminded every day about what a smashing birthday I’d had. The embarrassment faded with time and I was happy that I was courageous enough to stay and see the party through. I am glad that I stayed because it has become one of my favorite memories.
In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Inside the Bubble.”
I would want at least twenty books that I’ve been wanting to read and have been too busy to start. I would also need a notebook with several pens, three or four pillows to prop me up, a picture of my husband to inspire me, and some good lighting.
It would have to be a clear tube so I could look out at my smiling family, especially my wonderful husband who I know would be there every day.
It would also be nice to have some elastic exercise bands because when I got out with a clean bill of health I would want to continue training for my next marathon. When I run, I think and I get a lot of great ideas for my continuing story lines.
This was a great post,
I would stay the same age that I am now. I would also have my husband stay the same age. We have been married for 37 years and we love each other more today than yesterday. We are finished raising children and loving our grandchildren. We are both retired and can shut down the house whenever we want and take the RV up to the mountains or to another state or anyplace we please. We love being older, but still able to do everything we want to do physically and mentally. I hope all of you feel the same way when you get to the ‘Golden years’
Creepy is having a brother two years older who has the devil in him. Worse is the fact that he hated me because I had the bad fortune to be born on his birthday. I was six and he was ten when he first tried to kill me by scaring me to death.
First he tied me to a go-cart and then sent me flying down a steep hill. At the bottom of this steep hill was a major cross street with continues high traffic. Luckily there was a deep curve just before you started down the last section of hill and into traffic. Better yet was the fact that the go-cart with me still tied on, crashed into the deep curve turning the go-cart over. I started to scream and an older lady came out of her house and untied me. I had a bleeding cut on my head, road rash from my ankles to the top of my shoulders also shredding my shorts and tee shirt. It took a while for my red bruised to turn black and yellow, before my mother finally asked what had happened to me. Her answer was, “Well at least you didn’t get hit by a car.
About a month later he held me down over the mouth of a twenty foot deep dry well. While he held me down he made me watch him put a big snake into the dark pit. Then he pushed me in and put a piece of metal over the hole so I had no light at all. I screamed loudly for about fifteen minutes thinking that snake was going to crawl up my leg and bite me. I think he finally got scared that someone would hear me screaming and he took the metal off the hole and put a rope down for me to hold onto while he pulled me out. I had injured my back and had two large, bleeding cuts in by backside where I must have hit a couple of sharp rocks on the way down. Both my hands were bleeding from where I had tried to climb back up the rock-edged prison. I was still screaming and brushing my hands all over me to make sure the snake had not come up with me. My brother, his name was Rick told me to”shut up and warned me that if I told on him he would do something even worse to me.” I never told. But to this day I have a phobia of snakes and claustrophobia of small places. He did many more rotten things to me like loosening my bike seat and when I went to ride it the seat and I both fell off and I landed on my face and broke both my front teeth. He couldn’t even walk by me without giving me a good punch. He always warned me that if I told it would be much worse for me. I never told, but I should have. All of this and more was his punishment to me for having the nerve to be born on his birthday.
This was more than creepy. It was scary and painful. I still bear the psychological scars from my childhood. I only wish I had a picture to share with you. But if you imagine some of the horror shows where children were victims, then you will get your own visual of the horror that was my childhood.
I have written a lot of horror stories as I had a treasure trove of them available from real life. I developed my Brand as a direct result of my creepy childhood: Red-eyed Horror in a B. A. Cole Novel.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Have any of you had a CREEPY sibling like mine? I would love to hear about it.

I am here because I am a published author who loves to write. I am hoping this course will teach me more about widgets, tags, categories, and reassembling my site to become more welcoming to my visitors. I am looking forward to trying new themes, possibly adding hot buttons, featured images. It will be interesting to try out a two, three, or even a four column site and to combine colors and flags.
My first publication was: “Parisite”. Instead of getting right into the sequel to that book, “Parisite the Recovery “which I am writing now and can say it is more than half finished. I became involved in writing another book called
“Echoes of Horror”. the first time I sent it to a publisher I received a very nice rejection letter. She said that “I was a very good writer but that it was more paranormal than mystery and they were only publishing mysteries at that time. She went on to encourage me to keep sending the book out. One day I might just write a good mystery and send it to her.
Back to “Parasite the Recovery”. I have received many calls from people who are getting impatient about this sequel and have specific questions they want answered like exactly when the book is coming out, does the wedding come off, and does the main character, Rodger, live through the next book? So I decided to stop spending time with “Echoes of Evil” and only work on “Parasite the Recovery.
There is one thing I need to say about the way in which I printed my name on the cover. This was a lesson I learned the hard way. I used my initials B. A. Cole on the cover. I did not know at the time that search engines have a hard time with initials. So, many prospective customers could not find the book on Amazon or any place else. I bring this up here because if there is anyone out there who does not know about the problem between initials and search engines then you now have knowledge that will help you to stay away from that pitfall.
I am looking forward to this class and meeting all of you.

Hello to all:
I know it has been awhile, but I started and finished another book and have been busy sending it out to publishers. The new book is titled: “Echoes of Evil.” It is a paranormal with some adult content. One publisher told me that “I was a very good writer and that I should keep sending this manuscript out.” Her publishing house was only looking for mysteries at that time or she would have bought it. But I was getting calls and letters from people who had read “parasite” and they wanted to know when the second book in the series was coming out. They were especially interested in the wedding. They wanted to know if the wedding was going to take place or if Rodger had been mortally wounded or captured by the gang who had been abusing children and then roasting them on a metal rod over a hot fire and then eating them. So I am hot on the tail of getting “Parasite the Recovery” completed. I’m more than half way there and working on it every day. Please be patient as I promise not to take even one day off until it is up and published.
I have heard that a lot of readers are having trouble finding my first book “Parasite” and Amazon is not helping. The problem is that search engines have trouble finding titles when initials are used in the title. Unfortunately I did not know this until after I published the book. Instead of using my full name I used B. A. Cole and now it doesn’t want to come up even with the title of the book displayed next to the name. IF you keep trying the search engine will usually find it, but not until you are totally frustrated. I know I’ve tried it. It was a hard way to learn a lesson and I lost a lot of sales because of it. So, if you want to publish a book, make sure you do NOT use initials. My second book in the series will have my full name spelled out: Barbara A. Cole. I can only hope I saved a lot of you authors out there the trouble I ran in to.
Time for me to get back to work. I do hope some of you will stop by and say hello and if you read the book to let me know how you liked it.
